The mission of the Faculty of History as a centre of education of and research into history of the country is to train specialists in the revolutionary histories of President Kim Il Sung, Chairman Kim Jong Il and the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un, Korean history, world history, archaeology, folklore and foreign history.

It was separated from the former Faculty of History and Literature to be the Faculty of History in 1949.

The Faculty has six departments, which include Department No.1 of the Revolutionary History of the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung, the Department of the Revolutionary History of the great leader Comrade Kim Jong Il, the Department of the Revolutionary History of the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un, the Department of Foreign History, the Department of Religious Study, etc. and two research institutes (Institute of Korean History and Institute of Cultural Heritage). The Institute of Korean History is divided into the offices of Ancient History, Medieval History and Modern History, while the Institute of Cultural Heritage has the offices of Archaeology, Folklore, Natural History and Human Evolution.

The courses include the revolutionary histories, Korean history, foreign history and ancient folklore.

The main subjects include the "Revolutionary History of the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung", "Revolutionary History of the great leader Comrade Kim Jong Il", "Revolutionary History of the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un", "Korean History", "Korean Folklore", "History of Foreign Relations of Korea", "Korean Archaeology", ""History of Status System of Korea, "History of Land-owning System of Korea", "History of Houses in Korea" and "Foreign History".

The Faculty of History has a staff of about 160 lecturers and researchers including one candidate academician and forty Doctors of Philosophy. Seventy of them have professorship or associate professorship.

The faculty has some 1200 students.
