Enhanced Uplink Handover Scheme for Improvement of Energy Efficiency and Qos in LTE-A/5G Hetnet With Ultra-Dense Small Cells

 2024.8.7.

We have done a research on the uplink handover (UL-HO) being watched recently and proposed a new method to further improve the energy efficiency and QoS (Quality of Service). First, we have confirmed the UL-HO mechanism, mathematically formulated the power consumption by UL-HO, and compared different performance parameters such as power consumption by both downlink handover (DL-HO) and UL-HO. Then, we have proved through simulation that the reasonable target cell determination scheme which takes into account the moving direction of user equipment (UE), admission control, and reference signal received power (UL-RSRP), uses less power, has less delay and PLR (Packet Loss Rate). In particular, we have proposed a new algorithm to determine the reasonable target cell in terms of admission control and moving direction of UE, thus reducing HOR and PPR (Ping-Pong Rate). The improved UL-HO scheme can be implemented easily by adding some functions to the upper-layer protocol, while providing a lot of benefits such as reduced power consumption, delay, frequent HOs resulting in reduced HOR and PPR. Accordingly, this can be introduced into 5G as a HO scheme.
