Shedding Light on the Brilliant Prospects of Fruit Culture Development

 2026.10.6.

Every time we hear the song "Fruit Trees are Planted on Hills" enjoyed by our people, we warmly look back upon the immortal exploits of President Kim Il Sung who made all his devoted efforts to turn the DPRK into the country full of fruit.

Chairman Kim Jong Il said:

"President Kim Il Sung had long ago opened a new history of fruit farming in our country and devoted his all to supplying the people with tasty fruit in a larger amount."

Koreans know that Ryongjon ri, Pukchong County, South Hamgyong Province is the historic place where the Pukchong enlarged meeting of the presidium of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea was held.

President Kim Il Sung visited the then Munhwa Agricultural Cooperative in Ryongjon ri, Pukchong County on April 4th 1961.

His visit aimed to acquaint himself with the state of fruit farming in the agricultural cooperative that was an example of fruit culture before the Pukchong enlarged meeting and generalize it throughout the country.

Though he was in a chilly rain, the President looked at the mountain slope where apple and mulberry trees were planted with the officials from the cooperative and praised them for their carrying out the Party's policy creditably. Then he said the demonstration lecture should be organized there and the presidium of the Party central committee be held.

Having visited the cooperative several times to turn it into the famous apple-producing centre and created an example, the President prepared for the historic Pukchong meeting there to generalize it.

Prior to the Pukchong enlarged meeting was held a consultative meeting under the direct guidance of President Kim Il Sung and several people took the floor, including a fruit work-team leader of the cooperative who created an example by experience from a tiered orchard.

Saying that the meeting produced a lot of good experiences, the President instructed that machines and chemicals should be applied to fruit culture and that it should be banned to make too much of apples but a variety of fruit trees such as apricots, pears, plums and grapes be planted a lot under the climatic and soil conditions of the cooperative.

On April 7th, 1961, the historic Pukchong enlarged meeting of the presidium of the Central Committee of the WPK was held there under the guidance of President Kim Il Sung.

Stressing that they should make an effective use of mountains because the country had a lot of mountains, he said that increasing orchards on a large scale was the great revolutionary work to improve the people's livelihood, which was not only the work for the happiness of their generation but also the honorable one for the happiness of the coming generations. Then he instructed in detail the ways to carry out the gigantic project to transform the nature successfully.

In hearty response to the instruction of the President at the Pukchong meeting, all people turned out as one in the gigantic nature-transforming projects to change all mountains into the golden mountains and the forests of high economic value. Thus, the total area of fruit culture was 5.5 times larger than the one before the country's liberation with 51 000 hectares of fruit culture area increased for five years alone after the Pukchong meeting.

The pains and concern taken by President Kim Il Sung who devoted his all to the everlasting prosperity of the country and the people's rich life came to fruition, thus turning the country into the fruit country.
