Pak Thae Hun, a Famous Geographer of the DPRK

 2023.6.26.

The respected Comrade Kim Jong Un said:

"In line with the Party's education policy, the teachers and scientists at the university have trained large numbers of talented revolutionaries who are politically and ideologically sound and scientifically and technologically prepared: they have also proved the validity of KimilsungismKimjongilism and Party policy, given wide publicity to them and found wonderful solutions to the scientific and technological problems arising in developing the economy and culture and in consolidating our national defence capability. In this way they have made a positive contribution to advancing the revolutionary cause of Juche to victory."

The educators and scientists of Kim Il Sung University have devoted their lives to the development of the country and scientific research for its lasting prosperity and Dr. Pak Thae Hun, Kim Il Sung Prize Winner, People's Scientist, Academician, Prof., is one of them.

Born on September 19, 1906, he had a miserable life for being a stateless man. It was not until the liberation of the country that he could enjoy genuine happiness.

On November 3, Juche 34 (1945), he met President Kim Il Sung for the first time.

Listening to his heart's story, the President encouraged him to study the geography of Korea to the full and bring into full bloom the dream he had cherished in his youth.

The President discussed the building of a new country with him sitting on a wooden chair at an outdoor resting place.

Later, the President visited Paeksong-ri on April 12, Juche 41 (1952) during the Fatherland Liberation War.

He said that the university should carry out the research for the natural resources of the country and make rational use of them.

In order to carry out the tasks given by the President in July, Juche 41 (1952), he took charge of a group of researchers in the northern highlands formed of teachers and students of Kim Il Sung University and made a detailed survey of the Kaema and Paekmu Plateau areas during a month-odd period.

After the war, he led teachers and students of the university to conduct a preliminary survey of the west coastal tideland cutting his way through the mud in the severe winter weather, thus supporting in the van the work of land development of lasting significance and the grand nature-remaking project planned and designed by President.

Later, in the late 1960s, when tideland reclamation began on a large scale in our country, he continued his thoughts and research to carry out the President's instructions that it was important to solve the water problem in farming on the newly reclaimed tideland.

In the course of this, he came to the conclusion that there is groundwater under the tideland by drilling several places together with the prospectors bearing in heart the iron will that one should realize the President's instructions at any cost even if it needs to perforate the earth.

He said in raptures at that moment.

"When the President says something can be done, it really can.

This is a science and a truth that has been cemented by the experience in my 70-years life."

In this way, Pak Thae Hun contributed to carrying out the grand nature-remaking project by finishing the survey of the tideland in the difficult post-war period, true to the President's grand plan for transforming nature and arrived at his senescence.

But thanks to the trust and love of the President, he could devote his passion to education and geographical study and make new scientific research achievements even in his old ages overcoming mental laxity.

He took part in the education of the rising generation and scientific research from Juche 52 (1963) to Juche 80 (1991) and trained a large number of holders of academic degrees and titles.

He wrote many essays, textbooks and reference books including "Tideland of Korea", " Beautiful landscape", "Wide prospect of the west coast Tideland", "Natural Geography of Korea", "Natural conditions and resources" and "Geography Dictionary" to contribute to the geographical development of the DPRK.

In high appreciation of his feats, President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il conferred the academic degrees and titles of Professor and Doctor on him, and put him forward as one of the first Kim Il Sung Prize winners in our country, honored him as a deputy to the Sixth Supreme People's Assembly. Also the President and the Chairman conferred him the title of People's Scientist and the title of Academician of the DPRK and sent him a birthday table greeting his 80th birthday.

Receiving the sad news that he passed away, President sent a wreath in his name to Pak Thae Hun's bier and Chairman showed deep loving care for him that his exploits would be remained in the history of our country and our nation by laying him in state at the Patriotic Martyrs Cemetery.

The life of Pak Thae Hun who devoted all his life to the scientific research true to the ideas of President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il shows us for what the scientists of the present era should think and how they should pursue the world of science.
