A hammer, a sickle and a writing brush drawn on the flag of the Workers' Party of Korea

The respected Comrade Kim Jong Un said:

"Having inscribed a hammer, a sickle and a writing brush on its red flag, our Party has never been separated from the people and has always advanced the revolution by believing in them as in heaven."

President Kim Il Sung wisely led the work to develop the WPK into a popular party of the working people and paid deep attention to the work of designing the party flag and the party emblem so that the character and ideals of the party could be well shown.

Saying that it would be advisable to depict the Party emblem on the red flag symbolizing the revolutionary party, he said that the party emblem should symbolically reflect the unity of the working class, the working peasants and other working masses.

Party emblem is a symbol of the Party, an important means of clearly indicating the character and mission of the party and its popular foundation and the base of the party.

President said that only when the party emblem be represented with the workers, working peasants and working intellectuals together, can it symbolically show that it is a unified party of the working masses.

He gave detailed instructions on how to design the emblem one by one, including the issue of showing the working class with a hammer, the peasant with a sickle, the working intellectuals with a brush in our own way, the issue of crossing the hammer, sickle and brush at the midpoint of the helves, the issue of placing the hammer on the left side, the sickle on the right side, the brush in the middle, and of making the color of the party emblem yellow rather than black.

President stressed the need to place the brush in the middle of the hammer and sickle, but slightly higher than others, and explained the meaning that only then should all the workers and working peasants acquire high knowledge and culture and make a powerful contributing to the building of a prosperous and civilized, independent and sovereign state.

It was a precious instruction that could be given only by our leader who believed in and put forward intellectuals as the component of the Party just like workers and working peasants.

President pointing out the shortcomings in the design of the Party emblem, took a pencil and personally drew the design of the emblem on a white paper and gave detailed instructions on various issues arising in designing the Party emblem, including the ratio between the party flag and the emblem and the hammer, sickle and brush of the Party emblem.

Thanks to the deep care and energetic guidance of President, the emblem of the Party reflecting the revolutionary and popular character of the WPK with workers, working peasants and intellectuals as its constituent elements was born in the world and since then the hammer, sickle and brush drawn on the party flag have been shining as the symbol of the WPK for many years.
