Change in Crop Distribution

 2026.5.1.

The respected Comrade Kim Jong Un said:

"We should change crop distribution, limiting corn farming to the minimum and switching over to wheat and barley farming, together with rice farming."

Boldly changing the distribution of crops and switching over to wheat and barley farming, together with rice farming, was a grand plan clarified by the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un in his policy speech at the Fifth Session of the 14th Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK in September 2021, and presented in full scope at the Fourth Plenary Meeting of the Eighth Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea.

Everyone was surprised.

What an important decision and gigantic revolution it is to change the grain production structure at such a precious time when every grain of rice is so valuable.

At the subsequent Sixth Plenary Meeting of the Eighth Central Committee of the WPK, the respected General Secretary underscored that wheat farming should be pushed forward unconditionally and persistently as it is a Party's resolution and an essential issue to provide people with the conditions for improving their diet in a civilized way, not a matter of lesser importance. He instructed at the Seventh Plenary Meeting of the Eighth Central Committee, too, that we should push ahead with the work to increase the areas of sowing wheat and barely as an earlier crop and raise the per-hectare yield.

The respected General Secretary taught in detail the tasks and ways to push ahead with rice and wheat farming and took revolutionary measures for securing seeds, selecting the right places, ensuring sowing time and supplying farming materials, energetically leading the struggle for their realization.

He sometimes gave advice to cultivate the fields of poor growth condition by sowing winter wheat and barley late while making it up for wheat farming in spring, and sometimes took measures step by step to ensure water resources in the fields vulnerable to drought.

It has been only three or four years since he unfolded a plan to turn the fields into rice, wheat and barley farming by drastically changing the crop distribution. This policy, however, is displaying great vitality in practice.

In 2024 alone, the areas of wheat cultivation were increased to tens of thousands of hectares more than the previous year, and the national wheat production plan was overfulfilled by more than 140 percent and over 140 farms produced more than six tons of wheat per hectare, which was a remarkable success.
